Review of 'Tofurky' Italian Style Tofu Sausage

Tofurky -- Italian Style Tofu Sausage (vegan)
Overall Rating: 4.5/5
Summary: okay this 'sausage' delivers! It actually tastes meaty and the texture is very meat-like. Every bite is hearty and filling. The flavour is great--it's got a slight peppery kick, sun-dried tomatoes, and is so very tasty.

Where to buy: Fortinos, Real Canadian Super Store

Ingredients:Organic tofu (water, organic soybeans, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride), wheat protein product, expeller pressed canola or high-oleic safflower oil, water, soy sauce (water, soybeans, wheat salt), sun-dried tomatoes, textured wheat protein, spices, granulated garlic, salt, chili pepper, vitamins and minerals (dipotassium phosphate, niacin, iron, zinc oxide, vitamin B12, calcium, pantothenate, vitamin B6, riboflavin).

Contains soy and wheat.

The ingredients are organic and nutritious. The nutritional profile is pretty much perfect except for the high sodium content. It has a whopping 29g protein and 8g fiber! That's insane...find me a *real* sausage with 8g fiber! Precisely!

You absolutely have to try these...vegan or not. It's so yummy and more nutritious than a plain ol meat sausage. The flavour is slightly spicy and added with Texas Pete's Hotter Hot Sauce, I was in heaven. It's one of the hottest hot sauces out there! I liked that there were bits of sun-dried tomatoes and that the texture really mimicked meat very well. Although it's higher in calories than, say, a brand like Yves, it makes up for this in nutrition.

  1. Complete Lie!

I tried both the tofu Italian sausage and Polish kielbasa and both of them were some of the most disgusting things I ever put in my mouth. I tried both of them on two separate occasions and each time ended up throwing them out. I tried to feed them to my chickens, and they wouldn't even eat them. I'd really love if you all could come up with an edible vegetarian sausage-substitute.

  2. Hmm, I'm not sure you can actually pronounce "Complete Lie!"...this is a review based on my personal opinion, informed by by own unique tastes and preferences.

I conceded this sausage is clearly not for you...or for your chickens! Have you tried any other brands? Yves makes sausage links as well. Perhaps you could give that brand a try if you haven't already done so.
