Restaurant Review: Pickle Barrel

Restaurant: Pickle Barrel (Bramalea City Centre)
Overall Rating: 3.5/5
Summary:this location is really nice--clean, great service (very attentive waitstaff who wasn't at all overbearing), and decent food. Overall, I was happy with my order -- flavour-wise as well as portion size. Of the 6 dishes ordered between four people, 2 were considered to be lacking in flavour. These 2 were main entrees, however, so my two companions were not too pleased :/
Price: for my meal, $9.99

Food
  • Grilled Chicken Hummus Wrap (veganized -- no chicken, no cheese). This is served with a side of mixed greens and fresh fruit (watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew melon)
  • Caesar salad
  • Californian Avocado Spring Rolls
  • Crispy Fried Calamari
  • Red Thai Curry (Vegetarian)
  • Seafood Trio
I really enjoyed my meal -- the hummus wrap. The hummus was perfectly seasoned and very tasty. It was creamy and not at all lumpy or grainy. Loved it! The wrap was stuffed with veggies (black olives, mixed bell peppers, red onions, spinach, and sundried tomatoes). The only criticism I have is that it was dripping and making the tortilla a little soggy. It also made for a messy meal. I really liked that it was served with fresh fruit. It was like having a dessert and entree all together.

The appetizers (calamari and spring rolls) were a hit with everyone. The Red Thai Curry and the Seafood Trio were problems. The complaint for both dishes was that it was bland and needed more seasoning.

Service
Our waitress was attentive but not hanging over us every 2 minutes or awkwardly interrupting out meal.

Atmosphere
I like that Pickle Barrel is sophisticated (Moxie's-like) but relaxed enough to feel comfortable (unlike somewhere fancier, like The Keg). The restaurant was clean and the service was timely.
