Review of 'El Peto' Pancake Mix

El Peto -- Pancake Mix (vegan, GF)
Overall Rating: 3.5/5
Summary: well, let's seeee...it's not fluffy and light like traditional pancakes, but I expected that due to the gluten-free flour blend. It was denser and thinner with a slight chewiness (loved that), however I think this makes it more filling. I was full after just one medium-sized pancake (for real!). Well, it was made with real dairy milk (Organic Meadow) and eggs (local farm), so the protein might have been the agent at work. The taste itself was perfectly sweet and savoury. I docked marks for insufficient information about the company on the official website as well as uncertainty over the GMO status.

Don't be alarmed by the sodium content...if you make 6 pancakes, it ends up being only 220 cals. Overall, when you add your egg(s) and milk, the calories are reasonable. Once you start with add-ins (e.g. chocolate chips!), you'll start to run into trouble.

The nutrition isn't all that great...there's next to no protein and fibre per pancake. So really, this is an empty calorie breakfast. I won't be indulging in this too often...perhaps once a week or every two weeks. The search for a more nutrient-rich pancake continues.

Other mixes (all vegan):
Brand:
  • 100% dedicated gluten free, peanut free and oat free
  • Nutritionally-minded
  • Not very much information about the company on the website
