Review of 'Worthington Loma Linda' Vegetable Skallops

Worthington Loma Linda -- Vegetable Skallops (vegan)
Overall Rating: 3/5
Summary: does not taste very seafoodish nor does it pass the 'healthy ingredients' test, as it has monosodium glutamate, linked to health complications. The texture is nice and it works very well in pasta dishes, marinated in sauce.

Where to buy: US store locator

Ingredients: skallops (textured vegetable protein [wheat gluten, soy protein concentrate, water for hydration]); broth (water, salt, monosodium glutamate, L-lysine monohydrochloride)

The nutritional profile is pretty good. It's low calorie and has a solid amount of protein and a good amount of fiber. However, it's very high in sodium. Were it not for the unhealthy ingredient list, it wouldn't be bad. I used this to make a seafood pasta and it turned out very nice.

Review of 'Silk' Pure Almond almondmilk (Dark Chocolate)

Silk -- Pure Almond almondmilk (Dark Chocolate) (vegan)
Overall rating: 3.5/5
Summary: not very very clear on the dark chocolate flavour, but definitely very chocolatey. It's perfectly sweetened, smooth, and refreshing. There's a slight salty taste every so often that I didn't really care for. I'd recommend it for taste and healthy ingredients, but wouldn't buy it again myself simply because there's not much nutrition other than the fortified vitamins and minerals.

Where to buy: US store locator

Ingredients: almondmilk (filtered water, almonds), cane sugar, cocoa (Dutch Process), sea salt, locust bean gum, natural flavour, sunflower lecithin, gellan gum.

Okay, so sure, the ingredients aren't at all bad. However, for 120 calories, there's not much protein or fiber. Instead, it's mostly sugars and sodium with added vitamins and minerals. I'd prefer to buy something with more naturally occurring vitamins and minerals, more protein, and more fiber. I would recommend this for the great taste and good ingredients, but likely won't personally buy it again.

Review of 'Jacquot' Dark Chocolate 72%

Jacquot -- Dark Chocolate 72% (vegan)
Overall Rating: 3/5
Summary: not happy that there's no official website, since it means I can't learn more about the brand and company. The texture is very brittle and not at all soft. It is medium-sweet and you do get that dark chocolate flavour despite the high sugar content. All in all, it's just okay. Nothing really special in terms of flavour. I likely wouldn't buy this again.

So, for 240 calories, there's a high fat content that derives from the chocolate itself. It is plant based fat, so a healthier alternative to animal fats. Also important to note is that high in fat does not necessarily mean unhealthy fat and moderation is the key here. whole lotta fat! I'm not sure where that's coming from, but it isn't worth my time.

Okay, yes it may be scary for you to see almost 300 calories from 1 bar. But, recall that this is a protein bar and ideally meant for active folks. I normally would have this on a workout day and I am aware of the calorie count as well as the sodium count. So, you simply would balance it out with the activity of your day and your sodium intake for the day.

It gives everything you would need for a workout day: fat, carbs, protein, and vitamins and nutrients. I would definitely recommend this bar and would buy it again in a heartbeat. It's one of the wholesome brands out there, and the ingredients reflect this.

Review of 'Morningstar Farms" Hickory BBQ Riblets

MorningStar Farms -- Hickory BBQ Riblets (vegan)
Overall Rating: 3/5
Summary: very sweet, smoky flavour; it has one of the most authentic textures of any faux meat I've ever tried. I used this to make a pita wrap with veggies and it was delicious. I would not recommend this product because of the use of GMOs and artificial colours, both of which are linked to adverse health impacts.

Can't lie, this was pretty delicious and has a really nice nutrition profile. It's low-calorie, high fiber and protein, and low in bad fats. Review of 'Clif Bar' Peanut Toffee Buzz

Clif Bar -- Peanut Toffee Buzz (vegan)
Overall Rating: 4/5
Summary: this is a nice, sweet (with a hint of salt), drizzled (icing) protein bar that's chewy and filling. The only downside was the limited peanutty goodness. I would have liked more of an overall peanut flavour than pockets of peanutty-ness. The toffee flavour was also mild. If the peanut/toffee flavours were enhanced slightly, it would have been great! I recommend this bar for the clean ingredients and nutritional profile.

Review of 'Toufayan' Pita Bread (White)

Toufayan -- Pita Bread (White) (vegan)
Overall Rating: 2.5/5
Summary: pretty average, unless toasted. Nothing too exciting. I would have liked it to be more pliable, but it tends to break when you try to roll it or get creative. It's not very high-fiber and the preservative used, calcium propionate, has been linked to negative health effects. Note that these have not been confirmed, as they are only "links".

Where to buy: U.S. grocery stores (Florida, Maryland)

Review of 'Bob's Red Mill' Organic Old Fashioned Regular Rolled Oats

Bob's Red Mill -- Organic Old Old Fashioned Regular Rolled Oats  (vegan)
Overall Rating: 3.5/5
Summary: very fresh and great chewy texture, but missing a certain flavour that I've only experienced with Dan-D Organic Rolled Oats (my favourite oats!!). The nutritional profile is great, especially when you add milk...a very wholesome meal, especially for those looking to lower LDL cholesterol, increase fiber intake, and stay fuller for longer! I'd recommend oatmeal lovers try Dan-D Organic Oats, though I'd still recommend this brand.

Review of 'Worthington Loma Linda' Redi-Burger™

Worthington Loma Linda -- Redi-Burger™ (vegan)
Overall Rating: 3/5
Summary: not much info on the brand or quality of ingredients. I found the flavour very nice! It was actually smoky and meaty with a really great blend of spices. Unfortunately, it's a very soft patty that breaks apart very easily. The ingredients are not without issues (e.g. hydrolyzed soy protein, caramel colour, carrageenan). This brand is linked to Kellogg's and Morningstar, both of which have not confirmed the GMO status of this product, so I'd rather stay away. I won't be buying this again, regardless of how flavourful it is.

The nutritional profile is pretty good: for only 120 calories, it's low in saturated fat, high in fiber and protein. However, the sodium content is pretty high at 450mg for only 1 patty.

Summary: this is a super chocolatey, perfectly sweet, pretty filling high protein, wholesome snack bar for very active folks. They really aren't cheap with the chocolate coating. As usual, I have no issues with the ingredients. The nutrition facts are great! It's a low-calorie bar with saturated fats derived from coconut oil. Don't be alarmed at the saturated fats until you've read about it, since it's proposed that not all saturated fats are created equally and with coconut oil linked with health benefits. The bar has an average fiber count and a really nice 9g of protein and is packed with vitamins and minerals.

Review of 'Nature Valley' Crunchy Granola Bar (Apple Crisp)

Nature Valley -- Crunchy Granola Bar (Apple Crisp) (Vegan)
Overall Rating: 3.5/5
Summary: crunchy and fresh, medium sweet, with an apple aftertaste rather than apple flavour at first bite. I would have expected more of a presence of the apple flavour. The soy and corn ingredients may be GMOs, as there is no confirmation that the brand is non-GMO (see brand info below for more).

So, the ingredients wouldn't be so bad if not for the possibility of the corn and soy based ingredients likely being genetically modified. The nutrition info is decent as well--it's low calorie, low in saturated fat, and has a decent amount of protein and fiber...though not nearly enough protein and fiber to have me buy it again. Review of 'Golden Harvest' Plaitbread

Golden Harvest -- Plaitbread (vegan)
Overall Rating: 2.5/5
Summary: hmm, it has a rubbery/chewy texture and it is mild in flavour...the latter I enjoyed. I like that it's dense and filling, though I can't get over the nutritional profile (0g of fiber!) or the preservative (calcium propionate) so I'm not recommending this product.

I'm not thrilled with the ingredients (esp. the preservative linked to ulcers, headaches, etc.) and the poor ingredients are reflected in the nutritional info. There's absolutely no fiber...how is that possible? This bread just isn't worth it. I don't recommend it and won't be buying it again.

This is a really great product and the brand is also impressive for its commitment to healthy ingredients (at least for the products I have bought and reviewed). This low-calorie snack is nutrient dense, with 3g of fiber and 6g of protein and a dose of very healthy fats. You really can't go wrong here. I highly recommend this!

It's also high in vitamin E (linked to lower risks of cancer and heart disease, healthy immune system) and magnesium (for bone health, linked to lower blood pressure, prevention of diabetes).

Review of 'Blue Diamond' Almonds (Lightly Salted)

Blue Diamond -- Almonds (Lightly Salted) (vegan)

Summary: wow...these are a tad bit more salted than I expected and perfect for it. They are really, really very good. They are very crunchy and fresh and taste a bit like they've been toasted/roasted. I highly recommend this!

Wholesome ingredients *plus* great nutritional profile = 5/5. For only 170 calories (less than your average snack bar), you get a solid amount of healthy, non-saturated, fats and zero trans fats. Review of 'Nice and Natural' Cranberries & Cashews

Nice and Natural -- Cranberries & Cashews (vegan)
Overall Rating: 4.5/5
Summary: really big, juicy cranberries and raisins; a tangyness that's not too strong; moist and chewy; makes only for a light snack, so don't expect to be full in an hour! Highly recommend!

Where to buy: to be determined...

Ingredients: cranberries (apple juice infused), cashews, almonds, agave nectar, raisins, tapioca syrup, whole grain crisp brown rice, flax seeds, sunflower oil, sea salt, natural flavour.

This is a yummy bar...sticky, but yummy. The ingredients are all wholesome and it's pretty low calorie so I never feel bad snacking on these. It's a nice, light snack and very sweet, so if you're having a craving, this'll do the trick. There is only 2g of fiber and 3g of protein, but it's delicious and low-calorie enough for me to recommend and healthier than your average snack bar.

Review of 'Golden Harvest' Hi-Fiber Tennis Rolls

Golden Harvest - Hi-Fiber Tennis Rolls (vegan)
Overall Rating: 2.5/5
Summary: sweet, buttery flavour, but much too dry. The nutritional profile is pretty weak, so I really won't be buying this again, nor do I recommend it.

Where to buy: Caribbean countries (e.g. Guyana)

Ingredients: wheat flour, wheat bran, water, sugar, vegetable margarine, vegetable shortening, salt, yeast, improver (i.e. emulsifier, lecithin), flour treatment agent (L-ascorbic acid, lemon oil).

These ingredients are nothing to scream about. No whole grains and only 2g of fibre. Not worth my time. And for 230 calories, totally not worth my time. I cannot recommend this product.

Review of 'Odwalla' Banana Nut

Odwalla -- Banana Nut (vegan)
Overall Rating: 4/5
Summary: very very present banana flavour that's really nice. The aroma really supports the flavour--great! It's a stiff bar, which I like--it's chewy, yet no mess; very compact. And, there are actually enough nuts! No stingy-ness. It's also very, very filling, so makes for a great snack. I am recommending this!

Where to buy: US (Harris Teeter)/Canada

Ingredients: Brown Rice Syrup, Date Paste, Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Diced Dried Banana (Banana, Rice Flour), Walnuts, Organic Oat Flour, Banana Flakes, Oat Bran, Organice Invert Cane Syrup, Vegetable Glycerin, Crisp Rice (rice flour, rice bran, rosemary extract), Oat Fiber, Organic Sunflower Oil, less than 2% of: Barley Flour, Calcium Carbonate, Soy Lecithin, Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Natural Flavors, Baking Soda, Salt, Allspice, Citric Acid, Organic Malt, Vitamin E (D-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate) and Beta Carotene.

So, sure it's a little steep on sugars, but hey, I say gauging from the nutritional profile, it's well worth it. With 220 calories, it's low in saturated fat, low in sodium, and has a solid 5g of fiber and 4g of protein. No wonder it's so filling! This is more fiber than your average snack bar. Additionally, it's fortified with 25% calcium and 10% vitamin A and C, among others. Definitely more wholesome than your average Kellogg's, Quaker, etc. snack bar.

Review of Nature's Path 'Flax Plus Hot Oatmeal'

Nature's Path - Flax Plus Hot Oatmeal (vegan)
Overall Rating: 4.5/5
Summary: tastes quite fresh, has smaller oatmeal bits, not whole oat flakes (finer). The flaxseeds make a real difference in flavour and it works really nicely. It's only lightly sweetened when I use with water. If you add milk, flavoured milk, etc., it will add to the creaminess, flavour and sweetness, though I really enjoy the lightness of the water. If you're not up for very heavily sweet breakfasts, I highly recommend this product.

Where to buy: Bulk, Barn, Longos, Fortinos, US product locator

Ingredients: Rolled oats*, evaporated cane juice*, flax seeds*, sea salt.

*Organic. Produced in a facility that uses wheat, soy, milk and tree nuts.

Just 4 ingredients combine perfectly for a wholesome nutritional profile. For 210 calories, it's super low in fat, concentrated in the 'good' fats, low in sodium, and fantastic in fiber and protein. You can't really ask for more. Add some milk (dairy or otherwise), and it becomes a great little power breakfast, adding to protein, calcium, and iron.

Review of 'Toufayan' Pita Bread (Onion/Sweet Onion)

Toufayan -- Pita Bread (Onion/Sweet Onion) (vegan)
Overall Rating: 2.5/5
Summary: slight sweet taste, the onion flavour seems strong enough with the first chew, but disappears quite a bit after so that it starts to taste like a slightly sweeter pita, not an onion pita.I would have preferred a slightly less sweet taste and more wholesome ingredients (e.g. whole grain vs. enriched wheat flour), which would have boosted the nutritional profile. Also check out the health effects linked to calcium propionate (used as a preservative).

Where to buy: U.S. grocery stores (Florida, Maryland)

Photo of

Ingredients: enriched wheat flour (contains niacin, reduced iron, thiamine, mononitrate (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), folic acid), water, onions, yeast, contains less than 2% of each of the following: sugar, salt, calcium propionate (added to maintain freshness).

I'm not a big fan of the choice of wholly enriched wheat flour or calcium propionate. I much prefer whole grain, with more fiber and no preservatives. The calories are quite low, as is the fat. It's just too bad that the fiber content is so very low. I wouldn't recommend this product. I'll continue the search for a better pita with no preservatives and more whole grains, fiber, and possibly protein.

Other pita flavours:

Review of 'Fresh Finds' Dry Roasted Edamame

Fresh Finds -- Dry Roasted Edamame
Overall Rating: 4/5
Summary: very lightly salted, true to the labeling--I like! And, it was very fresh, very crunchy, very tasty. It was a hit with the entire vehicle of travelers over the last weekend's road trip. Would be best if there was some brand info online!

Where to buy: to be determined

Ingredients: soybeans, sea salt.

Sodium: 150mg

     Sugars: 1g
Protein: 14g

Well, I'm not sure if the soybeans are organic since I couldn't fund a webpage with product info. However, the ingredients are minimal so we can all appreciate that. The calorie count and nutritional content is pretty great as well--for 130 cals, there's 14g of protein and 8g of fiber. You can't beat that...low in saturated fat, clean protein and fiber.

Review of 'Golden Harvest' Whole Wheat Raisin

Golden Harvest -- Whole Wheat Raisin (vegan)
Overall Rating: 3/5
Summary: way too dry. It's medium sweet and has plump raisins. If it weren't so very dry, this would be quite good! The website doesn't have specific product information, so what you see here, you will have to trust. The parent company, DIH Ltd is involved in social responsibility activities as well (more info below).

Where to buy: Caribbean countries (e.g. Guyana)

Ingredients: wheat flour, wheat bran, water, raisins, sugar, vegetable shortening, vegetable margarine, salt, yeast, mixed spice.
Preservative: calcium propionate
Emulsifier, Lecithin
Flour Treatment Agents: L Ascorbic Acids

Nutrition Facts
Serving size: 4 slices

Protein: 7g
Vitamin A: 2%
Calcium: 6%
Iron: 15%

So, as for the ingredients...if they used real whole grains, the protein and fiber content would be richer.

I share the details for 2 slices, since this is a common serving. It would yield 2.5g of Fat, 190mg of Sodium, 28g of Carbs, 2.5g of Fiber, 3g of Sugar, 3.5g of Protein and 7.5% Iron. This is decent, but not impressive. The fiber and protein content isn't up to snuff for me.

Review of 'Nature's Path' Sunrise Crunchy Maple

Nature's Path --  Sunrise Crunchy Maple
Overall Rating: 4.5/5
Summary: mmm, captain crunch corniness, with strong maple scent and perfect maple flavour, this is amazing, it's super crunchy and very sweet; the combo of flavours is exquisite. I highly recommend this product and brand.

Where to buy: Bulk, Barn, Longos, Fortinos, US product locator

Ingredients: whole corn meal*, evaporated cane juice*, brown rice flour*, yellow corn flour*, inulin*, quinoa puffs*, maple syrup*, flax seeds*, natural maple flavor, buckwheat flour*, quinoa*, sea salt, amaranth*, molasses*, tocopherols (natural vitamin E).
*Organic.

     Fibre: 3g

So, in true Nature's Path form, the ingredients are excellent; no complaints there. The nutritional profile is good--it's super low in fat, has healthy fats, and low in sugar. The only downside is that the fiber and protein content isn't that great. For someone active, this is not ideal. So, I'd likely not make this a regular stock in my pantry.

Review of 'Pacific Foods' Rice Non-Dairy Beverage (Vanilla)

Pacific -- Rice Non-Dairy Beverage (Vanilla) (vegan)
Overall rating: 4/5
Summary: nice light scent, perfectly sweet, medium thick, but doesn't work well in tea/coffee as a creamer (but I use it anyway because it adds sweetness without added sugar). It has a very pleasant flavour--vanilla rice...kind of like a light dessert flavour. The product is non-GMO verified, however do be aware that there is some controversy over the use of carrageenan, linked to higher rates of colon cancer in animal studies.

Where to buy: Fortino's

 All Natural Rice Vanilla

Ingredients: Filtered Water, Brown Rice, Expeller Pressed Canola Oil, Natural Vanilla Flavor with Other Natural Flavors, Tricalcium Phosphate, Sea Salt, Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum, Carob Bean Gum, Carrageenan, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D2.

     Fiber: 0g
     Sugars: 14g
Protein: 1g
Vitamin A: 10%
Calcium: 30%
Iron: 6%

Again, save for the carrageenan question, the ingredients are no problem. The nutritional info paints a not-so spectacular profile. For 130 calories, it has no fiber and only 1g of protein...pretty sad. The only boon is the low fat and vitamin/mineral fortifications. To me, it's just not enough. I enjoy this product, but probably won't buy it again. I would opt for a non-dairy beverage with more nutritional value (e.g. more protein).
